A mobile court today (3 July) sentenced a man to 15 days of imprisonment for drowning a dog in Chattogram's Sandwip upazila.
The incident came to light after a video of the incident sparked widespread outrage on social media.
The convicted man, Abdul Hannan, 44, is a resident of the Goachhajir Bari area under Santoshpur union in the upazila, confirmed Sandwip Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sujan Haldar.
Speaking to The Business Standard, OC Sujan Haldar said police launched an investigation immediately after the video went viral.
"After analysing the footage, we identified the accused. A team led by Sandwip Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Amjat Hossain detained him, and conducted a mobile court," he said.
"Eventually, the court sentenced Hannan to 15 days of imprisonment under the Animal Welfare Act, 2019," added the OC.
The viral video showed the dog tied with a rope and submerged in water. Despite the animal's repeated attempts to survive, it was held underwater for an extended period.
The footage also showed several bystanders urging the accused to release the dog, but he ignored their pleas. The dog was pulled from the water only after it had died.
The matter was later reported to the local administration and police.
The incident triggered widespread condemnation on social media, with animal welfare advocates and others demanding swift legal action against the accused.
