Argentina manage to survive Cabo Verde scare 3-2 to reach last 16
With the score level at 2-2 deep into extra time and Cabo Verde appearing on course to force a penalty shootout against the defending champions, Borges inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, crushing the underdogs' hopes after another spirited performance
Cabo Verde's dream FIFA World Cup run suffered a heartbreaking twist on Friday as Diney Borges scored a 111th-minute own goal to hand Argentina a dramatic 3-2 victory in their Round of 32 clash.
With the score level at 2-2 deep into extra time and Cabo Verde appearing on course to force a penalty shootout against the defending champions, Borges inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, crushing the underdogs' hopes after another spirited performance.
Cabo Verde had once again fought back against Argentina after falling behind in extra time. The South American side restored their lead in the 92nd minute when Alexis Mac Allister flicked on Lionel Messi's corner and Lisandro Martínez bundled home from close range to make it 2-1.
But Cabo Verde refused to back down.
In the 103rd minute, Sidny Lopes Cabral stunned Argentina with a spectacular long-range strike that flew into the top-right corner, leaving goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez with no chance and bringing the score level once more.
Messi had opened the scoring in the 29th minute before Deroy Duarte equalised in the 59th after being set up by Ryan Mendes, forcing the tie beyond regulation.
Cabo Verde looked set to continue one of the biggest surprise stories of the tournament, but Borges' late own goal ultimately sent Argentina through in cruel fashion.
