Govt approves Teesta University in northern Bangladesh

The government has approved the establishment of Teesta University to expand access to quality higher education and research in Bangladesh's northern region Rangpur with the aim of producing skilled graduates and supporting regional socio-economic development.
The announcement was made today (28 July) by University Grants Commission (UGC) Member Prof Abdullah-Al-Mamun during the orientation programme for Teesta University's July-December 2026 semester at the Rangpur Shilpakala Academy auditorium.

He said the university would uphold high standards in education and research while creating greater opportunities for students in the northern region.
"There will be no compromise on the quality of education, research and academic activities. The goal is to develop Teesta University into an internationally recognised institution through modern infrastructure, qualified faculty, a research-friendly environment and technology-driven education," he said.
Prof Abdullah-Al-Mamun expressed optimism that, with the support of students, guardians, local communities and other stakeholders, Teesta University would emerge as a leading centre for higher education and research in northern Bangladesh.
He also said the UGC is implementing a series of reforms to reduce disparities in quality and capacity between public and private universities.
According to him, the initiatives include connecting universities through an integrated digital network, strengthening industry-academia collaboration, improving curricula, increasing investment in research and promoting good governance as part of the country's higher education reform agenda.
Begum Rokeya University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Shawkat Ali attended the programme as the special guest, while Teesta University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr M Abul Kashem presided over the event.
Chairman of the university's Board of Trustees Md Ashraful Alam Al-Amin, along with teachers, officials, students and guardians, also attended the orientation programme.
