DB arrests ex-ASP accused of abducting Sayeedi case witness
The arrest was carried out in response to a formal request from the tribunal.
The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested former assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Fazlur Rahman, who is accused of abducting Sukh Ranjan Bali, a prosecution witness in a war crimes case against Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi.
DB chief Additional Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam disclosed the information while speaking at a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road today (3 July).
Shafiqul said the arrest was carried out in response to a formal request from the tribunal. "The International Crimes Tribunal sent us a requisition. Based on that requisition, Fazlur Rahman was arrested," he said while responding to a question from journalists.
Fazlur Rahman was arrested from his residence by the DB's Cyber Crime Unit in Dhaka's Badda area at around 10pm yesterday (2 July).
According to police, he is accused of involvement in the disappearance of Sukharanjan Bali, a defence witness for Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi during proceedings at the International Crimes Tribunal.
The DB chief alleged that while serving with the Detective Branch, Fazlur Rahman and members of his team were directly involved in abducting Bali from the tribunal premises.
He said Fazlur Rahman was handed over to the International Crimes Tribunal following his arrest. The tribunal later ordered that he be sent to jail pending further proceedings.
He was most recently serving with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
