Christopher Nolan's latest film, "The Odyssey", has opened to widespread critical acclaim, earning a 98% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of its nationwide theatrical release on Friday (17 July).
The score is based on 116 critic reviews published after the review embargo was lifted on Wednesday, although the site's Critics Consensus, Audience Score and verified Popcornmeter ratings are yet to be released, reports the Forbes.
Written and directed by the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Oppenheimer, The Odyssey is based on Homer's epic poem and follows Greek king Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, on his perilous journey home after the Trojan War to reunite with his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland).
The film also features an ensemble cast including Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong'o, Himesh Patel, Jon Bernthal, Elliot Page, John Leguizamo, Mia Goth, Benny Safdie, Corey Hawkins and Bill Irwin as a voice actor.
Despite months of online debate over elements such as the use of American accents and some casting choices, early reactions from critics have been overwhelmingly positive.
Industry forecasts project the film's North American opening weekend to earn between $80 million and $120 million at the box office.
Rated R, The Odyssey begins preview screenings on Thursday before opening in theatres nationwide on Friday.
