A Dhaka court today (16 July) granted bail to Salman F Rahman, former industry and investment adviser to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and vice-chairman of Beximco Group, in a cheque dishonour case involving Tk112 crore.
Following a hearing, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam granted bail upon a bond of Tk1,000.
Defence lawyer Mohaddesul Amin confirmed the development to The Business Standard.
He said an arrest warrant had been issued against Salman F Rahman on 7 May after the case was filed. He added that the other accused in the case had already secured bail.
The case was filed on 9 January this year by Ujjal Mondal on behalf of Export Import Bank of Bangladesh (EXIM Bank).
The complaint names 10 individuals and representatives of five companies as the accused.
The other accused are Ahmed Saiyan Fazlur Rahman, Mahfuzur Rahman, Imran Mondal, Md Lutfur Rahman, Mosa Mashkura Khanam, Md Saifur Rahman, Abu Nayeem Mohammad Saleheen, Md Mostafizur Rahman Tanvir and ASF Rahman.
The companies involved are Beximco LPG Unit-1 Limited, SCAP Holding Limited, SFR Holding Limited, ASR Holding Limited, and Beximco Holding Limited.
According to the case statement, a cheque worth Tk112 crore was issued on behalf of Beximco LPG Unit-1 Limited following repeated demands from the bank.
When the cheque was submitted to EXIM Bank's Head Office Corporate Branch on 19 November 2025, it was returned the same day with the remark "Insufficient Funds".
Subsequently, on 26 November, a legal notice was sent to the accused by registered post under Sections 138 and 140 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, directing them to clear the cheque amount within 30 days. However, the accused failed to make the payment within the stipulated period.
The bank then filed the case seeking legal action over the dishonoured cheque.
