BNP leader hacked to death in Adabar after dispute over whistling during World Cup match
The deceased, Md Abul Bashar Badsha, 45, was the general secretary of the BNP’s Nabodoy Housing Unit
A local BNP leader was hacked to death and another party leader injured in Dhaka's Adabar last night (1 July) following a dispute that reportedly began over whistling while watching a FIFA World Cup match.
The deceased, Md Abul Bashar Badsha, 45, was the general secretary of the BNP's Nabodoy Housing Unit. The injured, Md Saddam Hossain, 35, is the president of the same unit.
The incident took place around 8:30pm on Road No 1 of D-Block near Nabodoy Kacha Bazar.
Confirming the incident to The Business Standard, Jewel Rana, additional deputy commissioner of police of the DMP's Mohammadpur Zone, said both men were attacked with sharp weapons in the Nabodoy Kacha Bazar area.
"Both victims were rescued by locals and first taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. They were later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment, where Abul Bashar died at around 11:30pm," he said.
The ADC said the attack stemmed from a dispute over whistling during a recent Brazil-Japan World Cup match. He added that police were working to identify and arrest those involved.
According to police and local sources, the dispute began on 29 June when a local BNP leader named Habib got into an altercation with the son of a trader at Nabodoy Bazar over whistling during the Brazil-Japan match. The dispute later led to several rounds of scuffles between the two sides.
Following the incident, Saddam Hossain filed a complaint with Mohammadpur Police Station.
A local mediation meeting was held at Nabodoy Kacha Bazar around 7pm yesterday in an attempt to resolve the matter.
However, the meeting failed to settle, and another clash broke out. At one stage, people from the opposing side hacked Bashar and Saddam, leaving them critically injured.
Family members said Abul Bashar worked as a private car driver. He hailed from Nandail upazila in Mymensingh and lived with his family in a rented house on Road No 1 of B-Block in Adabar.
