Three detained over killing of BNP leader in Adabar
The attack took place yesterday around 8:30pm on Road No 1 in D-Block near Nabodoy Kacha Bazar.
Police have detained three suspects in connection with the hacking death of a local BNP leader in Dhaka's Adabar, a day after the fatal attack that allegedly stemmed from a dispute over whistling during a football match.
The suspects – Shoaeb, Arman and Nayan – were detained from the Nabodoy Housing area of Adabar around 5pm today (2 July), Officer-in-Charge Zahidul Islam of Adabar Police Station confirmed.
He said the three were being questioned over the killing of Md Abul Bashar Badsha, 45, general secretary of the BNP's Nabodoy Housing Unit. No case had been filed by the victim's family as of yesterday evening, he added. Police handed over Bashar's body to his family after an autopsy.
The attack took place around 8:30pm on Wednesday on Road No 1 in D-Block near Nabodoy Kacha Bazar, where Bashar and the BNP unit's president, Md Saddam Hossain, 35, were hacked and critically injured.
Locals took the two to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital before they were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where Bashar died around 11:30pm.
According to police and local sources, the dispute began on 29 June when local BNP leader Habib argued with Nirob, the son of a trader at Nabodoy Bazar, over whistling while watching a Brazil–Japan football match. The disagreement escalated into several clashes between the two sides, prompting Saddam to file a complaint with Mohammadpur Police Station.
A mediation meeting was held at Nabodoy Kacha Bazar around 7pm on Wednesday, but it failed to resolve the dispute. Another clash broke out, during which Bashar and Saddam were allegedly attacked with sharp weapons.
Family members said Bashar worked as a private car driver. He hailed from Nandail upazila in Mymensingh and lived with his family in a rented house in Adabar.
