After Messi and Ronaldo, it’s Mbappe vs Haaland
Mbappe has 16 World Cup goals in just 16 appearances
For nearly two decades, football belonged to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Every major tournament, every Ballon d'Or debate and every Champions League night revolved around the sport's greatest rivalry. But as their remarkable era begins to wind down, another battle is taking shape one that could define the next generation.
Tonight (26 June) in Boston, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland will face each other at a FIFA World Cup for the first time.
Beyond the race for top spot lies a fascinating duel between two forwards who have redefined goalscoring in modern football.
Although they have crossed paths several times in the UEFA Champions League while representing Real Madrid and Manchester City respectively, this will be the first time Mbappe and Haaland face each other at a World Cup.
And both arrive in devastating form.
Mbappe has once again shown why the World Cup is his favourite stage. After bursting onto the scene in 2018 and helping France lift the trophy with four goals, he returned in 2022 to claim the Golden Boot with eight goals, including a memorable hat-trick in the final against Argentina.
His 2026 campaign has been equally ruthless.
The France captain opened the tournament with two goals in a thrilling 3-2 victory over Senegal before adding another brace in a comfortable 3-0 win against Iraq. Four goals in two matches have taken his overall World Cup tally to 16 goals in just 16 appearances.
Only Lionel Messi, with 18 goals, stands above him on the tournament's all-time scoring list, while Mbappe has already drawn level with Miroslav Klose despite being only 27 years old. If he maintains his current scoring rate, another World Cup record could soon be within reach.
Yet if Mbappe is football's most explosive attacker, Haaland remains its most ruthless finisher.
For Norway, simply qualifying for the World Cup was historic. The Scandinavian nation returned to football's biggest tournament for the first time since 1998 after a 28-year absence, with Haaland leading the way. The Manchester City striker finished as the top scorer in European qualifying with 16 goals in just eight matches, carrying Norway unbeaten into the finals.
He has wasted little time making his mark.
Haaland scored twice on his World Cup debut in a 4-1 victory over Iraq before adding another brace against Senegal to send Norway into the knockout rounds. Like Mbappe, he enters tonight's clash with four goals, placing both stars firmly in contention for the Golden Boot alongside Lionel Messi and Vinicius Junior.
Despite sharing the same position, the two forwards could hardly be more different.
Mbappe is built on speed, creativity and unpredictability. He drifts across the frontline, attacks defenders one-on-one and can create opportunities as easily as he finishes them.
Haaland, meanwhile, is the ultimate penalty-box predator. His game revolves around timing, movement and relentless efficiency. He may touch the ball fewer times than almost any elite striker, but few players convert chances with such ruthless consistency.
Together, they represent two contrasting visions of modern attacking football.
The respect between them has always been evident.
"He's an incredible player, one of the best in the world," Haaland once said of Mbappe.
Mbappe, meanwhile, has consistently downplayed suggestions of a personal rivalry, insisting his focus remains on France rather than individual battles.
That mutual admiration is unlikely to lessen the intensity when they meet in Boston.
Both captains have already propelled their nations into the knockout stage. Now they have another opportunity not only to secure top spot in Group I but also to strengthen their claims in the race for the Golden Boot and further cement their status as football's next defining superstars.
For years, comparisons between Mbappe and Haaland have fuelled debates across stadiums and social media. Tonight, those discussions finally move from theory to reality.
