The appointment was announced through a gazette notification issued by the Contract and Foreign Recruitment Wing of the Ministry of Public Administration last night (11 June)
Engineer Belayet Hossain has been appointed chairman of the Chattogram Development Authority (CDA).
The appointment was announced through a gazette notification issued by the Contract and Foreign Recruitment Wing of the Ministry of Public Administration last night (11 June).
According to the notification, signed by Deputy Secretary Golam Rabbani, Hossain has been appointed on a contractual basis to the Grade-2 post of chairman of the Chattogram Development Authority for a one-year term from the date of joining, under Section 7(1) of the Chattogram Development Authority Act, 2018.
The notification states that he must relinquish any professional, business, or employment ties with government, semi-government, or other organisations before assuming office.
It also said that the remaining terms and conditions of the appointment would be determined through a formal contract and that the order had been issued in the public interest.
Belayet Hossain previously served as joint convener of the BNP's Chattogram North district unit and general secretary of the party's Sandwip upazila unit.
During the Awami League government's tenure, he was jailed several times in connection with multiple cases, according to party sources.
He had sought the BNP nomination from the Chattogram-3 (Sandwip) constituency ahead of the 13th parliamentary election but was not selected after veteran party leader and former lawmaker Mostafa Kamal Pasha secured the nomination.
Hossain became involved in nationalist student politics through Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal while studying at Chattogram Polytechnic Institute and later played an active role in BNP politics.
