Youth dies after being shot by Indian Khasi near Sylhet border

A youth was reportedly shot by a member of the Indian Khasi community near the Gowainghat border in Sylhet today (11 July), according to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The deceased, Minhaz Uddin, 25, son of Kamar Uddin from Paschim Jaflong Union in Gowainghat Upazila, had allegedly entered about 1km inside Indian territory in the Lakhat Station area of Meghalaya when he was shot around 3am.
He was brought back to Bangladesh but died on the way to hospital, said Lieutenant Colonel Md Nazmul Haque, commanding officer of Sylhet Battalion (48 BGB).
"Preliminary information suggests that Minhaz entered approximately 1km inside Indian territory, allegedly with the intention of theft or another unlawful purpose," Nazmul Haque said.
"He was reportedly shot by Khasi people there. An investigation into the incident is underway," he added.
Gowainghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Omar Faruk said a police team visited the scene after receiving reports of the shooting. The body is being sent to the morgue at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for further procedures.
According to locals, Minhaz was known to bring goods into Bangladesh through illegal cross-border routes for sale. However, it has not been confirmed why he was in the area at the time of the incident.
