TIB urges comprehensive anti-corruption strategy in meeting with PM
TIB had earlier submitted a set of policy recommendations to the government in March, which formed the basis of today's discussion.
Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman met Prime Minister Tarique Rahman this morning (7 May).
The meeting took place at the Prime Minister's Office at the Cabinet Division of Secretariat at 11am, according to the Prime Minister's Press Wing.
Speaking to The Business Standard after the meeting, Iftekharuzzaman said TIB highlighted the need for a comprehensive strategy to implement the accountable governance and anti-corruption commitments made by the ruling party in its 31-point reform agenda, election manifesto and the July Charter.
He said a time-bound implementation plan should be adopted, taking into account the government's strong public mandate, public expectations, and existing risks and resistance within the political and governance space.
"While things cannot be expected to change overnight, none of the new government's commitments, alongside some inspiring examples already set, particularly by the prime minister, can truly serve their purpose without ensuring accountable governance, institutional integrity and effective corruption control at various levels," he said.
