Kamalapur metro rail extension to open in April next year
Test runs on the extended section of MRT Line-6 are scheduled to begin in January, project director says.
The extended section of the metro rail from Motijheel to Kamalapur is set to begin commercial operations in April next year, project officials said today (5 July).
"Commercial operations on the extended line will commence in April next year, while test runs on the newly laid tracks will begin in January," Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development project director, retired Brigadier General Md Abdul Wohab, told BSS.
He said the test runs would be conducted along the entire route from Uttara North Station to Kamalapur -- the country's first metro rail corridor, officially known as MRT Line-6 -- during nighttime after regular passenger services end.
Project officials said about 77% of the extension work, including the construction of the 1.16-kilometre viaduct, one station, and rail tracks, had been completed by June this year. Architectural work and the station's entry and exit facilities are currently under construction.
As of June 2026, all piles, pile caps, piers, station columns, precast structures, concourse roof, platform slabs, track slabs, parapet walls, and the steel roof structure of Kamalapur station had been completed, they said.
Officials said electrical equipment, including automated doors and signalling systems, would soon arrive for installation. They expect track-laying work to be completed within the next two months.
Construction of entry and exit facilities, installation of interior wall tiles and fixed window glass, and painting of the station's interior and exterior are also underway.
Meanwhile, workers have completed casting 100 of the planned 298 precast segments at the Uttara Construction Yard.
The total length of MRT Line-6 from Uttara North to Kamalapur will be 21.26 kilometres.
Commercial operations on the Uttara-Motijheel section of the metro rail began in November 2023.
