Flooding persists in 7 districts; 4 rivers flow above danger level
Authorities remain on alert over water levels in the Teesta River in northern Bangladesh.
Flooding continued across seven districts today (11 July), although reduced rainfall over the past 24 hours compared with the previous two days has somewhat eased fears of further deterioration.
Meanwhile, water levels at six monitoring stations on four rivers remained above the danger level, according to a Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) notification published this morning.
The affected stations are Bandarbans and Dohazari on the Sangu River in Bandarban; Markuli in Sunamganj and Fenchuganj in Sylhet on the Kushiyara River; the Manu River in Moulvibazar; and the Balla station on the Khowai River in Habiganj.
Sardar Uday Raihan, executive engineer at the FFWC, told Prothom Alo that flooding is currently affecting seven districts: Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Chattogram, Cox's Bazar and Bandarban.
He said, "Heavy rain is likely across south-eastern Bangladesh, particularly in the Chattogram region, over the next 24 hours, leaving little prospect of any significant improvement in flood conditions there. Flooding may also develop in the Feni region during the same period."
However, Raihan noted that rainfall across the south-east and the north-east, including Sylhet, has been comparatively lower over the past 24 hours than during the previous two days, describing this as a positive sign.
If heavy rainfall continues to ease from Monday (13 July) onwards, the flood situation is expected to improve gradually, he added.

Raihan said there is a risk that the river could rise above the danger level at several locations within the next 48 hours.
However, water levels in the country's two major rivers, the Ganges and the Jamuna, remain below the danger threshold. In particular, the Jamuna has started to recede, offering some relief.
