Mamata Banerjee no longer Bengal CM, governor dissolves assembly
This dissolution, as per the official statement issued by the Lok Bhavan, comes after the term of the state legislative assembly, during which the TMC was in power, ended today.
West Bengal Governor RN Ravi today (7 May) dissolved the state assembly, citing the end of the term. With this move, Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee is no longer the state's chief minister, despite her refusal to step down.
This dissolution, as per the official statement issued by the Lok Bhavan, comes after the term of the state legislative assembly, during which the TMC was in power, ended today.
On Monday (4 May), the Election Commission of India declared that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had won a majority in the West Bengal assembly elections, securing 207 seats.
The BJP's landslide victory came as a major setback for the TMC, which was reduced to 80 seats.
Governor dissolves assembly
The dissolution of the state government comes after the assembly term of the TMC government expired today.
The TMC government, led by Banerjee, returned to power in 2021.
"In exercise of the powers conferred upon the Governor under sub-clause (b) of Clause (2) of Article 174 of the Constitution of India, Hon'ble Governor of West Bengal, Shri RN Ravi, has issued an Order dissolving the West Bengal Legislative Assembly with effect from 07 May 2026. The Order has come into force in accordance with the constitutional provisions contained under Article 174(2)(b) the Constitution of India," reads the official statement issued by the Lok Bhavan, accessed by HT.
Mamata says 'won't resign'
Following the TMC's crushing defeat in the assembly elections, Mamata Banerjee stated that she would not resign as chief minister.
"No question of me resigning, we were defeated not by public mandate but by conspiracy," said Mamata during her press conference earlier this week.
On Wednesday (6 May), in a closed-door meeting, the TMC leader was stood firm on not resigning and was quoted as saying: "Let them impose President's Rule if they want. Let them dismiss me if they want."
