16 die, dozens injured in separate bus crashes in Sylhet, Bogura
In Sylhet, two passenger buses collided head-on in Osmaninagar, while in Bogura, a passenger bus lost control and crashed into an electric pole in the Bogura–Naogaon regional highway.
At least 16 people were killed in two separate bus accidents in Sylhet and Bogura today (7 August).
In Sylhet, at least nine people were killed and more than 30 others injured after two passenger buses collided head-on in the Dayamir area of Osmaninagar at around 7:30am.
The deceased were identified as Haji Saiful Islam, 50, son of late Safiuddin of Laxmipur village under Kuliarchar Police Station in Kishoreganj; Zaifa Islam Faiza, 4, daughter of Jahangir of Chandipul area under Dakshin Surma Police Station in Sylhet; Saptam Roy Pritam, 22, son of Uttam Roy of Sobhanighat in Sylhet; Baul singer Peheli Bhairabi, 17, daughter of Babul Mia of Chandiber village under Bhairab Police Station in Kishoreganj; Abul Hossain, 44, son of late Barek Mia of Bogdahar village under Nabinagar Police Station in Brahmanbaria; Arman, 19, son of Rafiqul Islam of Umanpur village under Jaintapur Police Station in Sylhet; Saniad Jahangir Sourav, 39, son of Abdus Salam of Pirkashimpur village under Bangura Bazar Police Station in Cumilla; Md Saiful Islam Imon, son of Sirajul Islam of Sherpur village under Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station; and Rubel Sutradhar, 37, son of Ranjit Sutradhar of Shaidhar (Atrampur) village under Nikli Police Station in Kishoreganj.

Meanwhile, 13 people injured in the accident were admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. They are Wab, 45; Mansur, 34; Atikul Islam, 48; Babul, 40; Mofiz Mia, 55; Sajid Nur, 45; Nurunnahar, 40; Mukhtar Hossain, 65; Jahangir, 28; Afzal, 30; Afroza, 38; Montu, 30; and Raju, 55.
Osmaninagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Morshedul Alam Bhuiyan said a Bengal Paribahan bus and a Unique Paribahan bus collided head-on in the area.
The bodies were recovered and sent to the morgue of Osmani Medical College Hospital, the OC said.
Meanwhile, in Bogura, seven people were killed after a passenger bus lost control and crashed into an electric pole in the Erulia area on the Bogura–Naogaon regional highway at around 5am.
Three victims, all workers, died at the scene, while four were pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital.
The deceased were identified as Abu Sayeed, 45, a resident of Enayetpur village in Gobindaganj, Gaibandha; Nur Alam, 45, of Boillagram in Gobindaganj; Anarul, 55, of Kalai in Joypurhat; Amirul, 40, of Panchbibi in Joypurhat; Tajimul, 45, of Parbatipur in Dinajpur; Bellal Hossain, 45, of Fapor in Bogura Sadar; and Nur Mohammad Sardar, 67, of Narhatta village in Kahalu, Bogura.
According to locals, a Shah Fateh Ali Paribahan bus travelling from Dhaka to Naogaon veered off the road near Erulia Bazar before crashing into a roadside electric pole.
Bogura Sadar Police Station Assistant Sub-Inspector Shafiqul Islam Shafik said legal procedures are underway.
The injured were taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura for treatment. The identities of the deceased in both accidents could not be confirmed immediately.
