India declares one-day national mourning for former Qatar Emir Sheikh Hamad Al-Thani
The national flag will fly at half-mast across India on Monday following the death of the former Qatari ruler at the age of 74.
India has declared a one-day national mourning tomorrow (13 July) as a mark of respect for former Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, who died today at the age of 74.
In a statement, India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the national flag will be flown at half-mast on all buildings where it is regularly displayed across the country. There will also be no official entertainment on the day of mourning.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Sheikh Hamad, describing him as "a visionary leader who guided Qatar to great levels of development and prosperity."
"We also remember him as a true friend whom I had the honour of meeting during my last visit to Qatar in February 2024," Modi wrote in a post on social media.
The MEA said the government declared the national mourning in honour of Sheikh Hamad, who was also known as the Father Emir of Qatar.
