The death toll in a student hostel collapse in southwest Delhi rose to six as rescue and search operations for survivors entered their second day.

Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa told reporters that the National Disaster Response Force continued the rescue operation, but a neighbouring 40- to 50-year-old pillar-less building, which is also in poor condition, was making the operation challenging.

"Columns are being erected underneath it to strengthen the structure. Until the entire site is cleared, efforts will have to continue to ensure that there are no further casualties in the debris," he said, adding that six deaths had so far been confirmed.
A total of 12 people have been rescued, of whom six could not survive.
