WHO oversees Hantavirus response as MV Hondius arrives at Canary Islands
The MV Hondius has arrived in Tenerife after a deadly hantavirus outbreak linked to the rare Andes strain killed three passengers during a month-long isolation at sea. Authorities from 23 countries are coordinating a major security and repatriation operation around the cruise ship.
Medical teams, quarantine measures, and charter flights are now in place as WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus oversees the response. Officials say the wider public risk remains low despite growing concern surrounding the outbreak.
