The history behind the name ‘Jantar Mantar’
Delhi's 'Jantar Mantar' has come into the limelight again due to the Gen-G protests in India. Although it is a place of protest for many, it is actually an astronomical observatory built in the 18th century. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II built it to observe planets and stars and determine time. Currently, four Jantar Mantars survive in Delhi, Jaipur, Ujjain and Varanasi. Due to their unique combination of science, architecture and history, they are still one of the most important historical monuments in India.
