Riot

Riot

French high school and university students attend a demonstration in Nantes as part of an ongoing protest movement demanding better school conditions and government action, France, October 15, 2026. 'Bismillah, c'est les ténèbres': What does the slogan mean, and why are French students using it?

The phrase, mixing Arabic and French, has become a sarcastic protest slogan mocking suspected police infiltration of student movements, amid wider tensions over discrimination and surveillance.
