World Cup 2026: Who's through, who's out and how the round of 32 works
The expanded 48-team Fifa World Cup has created a new race to the round of 32. Here's who has qualified, who is out, and how the battle for the remaining places will be decided.
The race for the Fifa World Cup 2026 knockout stage is intensifying as the expanded 48-team tournament enters its final round of group matches. Thirteen teams have already secured places in the round of 32, while others continue to battle for qualification in a competition that has delivered surprises, standout performances and high-stakes drama.
How round of 32 work
The expansion from 32 to 48 teams introduced an extra knockout round. Here is the simple breakdown:
- 24 teams qualify automatically, the top two finishers from each of the 12 groups.
- 8 wild-card spots are filled by the eight best third-placed teams from across all 12 groups.
- That gives you 32 teams, and the knockout bracket is set, then it is straight elimination all the way to the final on 19 July.
