Science ministry meeting reviews mosquito-control research, technologies
Bangladesh must adopt integrated and multi-pronged strategies to effectively curb mosquito-borne diseases, Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology Md Anwar Hossain said on Wednesday.
He made these remarks as the chief guest at an inter-ministerial meeting held at the conference room of the Ministry of Science and Technology at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
The meeting was organised to review research and technological innovations in mosquito eradication.
Secretary Md Anwar Hossain emphasised that research, technological innovation and coordinated cooperation among all relevant stakeholders are essential to contain mosquito-borne diseases.
He further stated that researchers need firm commitment, dedication and goal-oriented action plans to achieve success. "If research is conducted with a clear scientific objective, realistic and effective results can be achieved," he added.
The Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology called for the development of modern and innovative technologies to ensure effective intervention at different stages of the mosquito lifecycle.
He also stressed the importance of verifying and shortlisting promising research-backed technologies and gradually testing them in the field through pilot projects.
Researchers and experts at the meeting emphasised the need to adopt an integrated strategy to control mosquito-borne diseases.
Presentations and detailed discussions focused on potential new technologies for effective mosquito control, research progress and innovative ideas.
Among others, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology Muhammad Ashraf Ali Faruk; professors and researchers from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh, and the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research; Dr Murshida Khan, Bangladeshi expatriate researcher who joined virtually from Australia; and representatives from the Local Government Division, Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation attended the meeting.
