LGED project holds workshop on occupational health and safety
The Climate Resilient Infrastructure Mainstreaming Project of the Local Government Engineering Department organised a two-day training workshop titled "Preparation of Occupational Health and Safety Action Plan" at LGED Headquarters on 5–6 July 2026.
The workshop was held at the seminar hall on the 12th floor of the RDED Building.
Md Azharul Islam, Additional Chief Engineer of the Local Government Engineering Department and Director of the Climate Resilient Local Infrastructure Centre, inaugurated the workshop.
Md Saifuddin, Superintending Engineer of the Human Resources, Environment and Gender Division of the Local Government Engineering Department, attended the event as special guest.
Md Abdul Khaleque, Project Director of the Climate Resilient Infrastructure Mainstreaming Project, presented the background, objectives and significance of the training.
The training was conducted by Sebastien Frionnet, Consultant of KfW, as the lead resource person. Sheikh Touhidur Rahman, Urban Portfolio Coordinator of KfW, was also present.
During the sessions, Frionnet highlighted the importance of occupational health and safety, its fundamental principles, and its role in ensuring a safe and healthy working environment.
He discussed hazard identification, risk assessment, hierarchy of controls, emergency preparedness, awareness and capacity building, and the development of key performance indicators for monitoring and evaluating occupational health and safety performance.
The workshop also included practical exercises, participant presentations and interactive feedback sessions, enabling participants to apply the concepts in workplace settings.
The workshop was attended by executive engineers, senior assistant engineers and assistant engineers of the Local Government Engineering Department from Bhola, Barguna and Satkhira; the executive engineer of Satkhira Pourashava; specialists from the DSM Consulting Firm; representatives of contracting firms; and personnel working under different projects.
Executive engineers, senior assistant engineers and assistant engineers from the Climate Resilient Infrastructure Mainstreaming Project and the Climate Resilient Local Infrastructure Centre also participated in the training.
Speaking at the closing session, Md Azharul Islam said, "LGED plays a vital role in infrastructure development across Bangladesh, from the grassroots to the national level. Our engineers and field personnel work in challenging environments every day, where construction sites often present significant physical hazards. Ensuring the safety of engineers and workers is not optional; it is both our professional and moral responsibility."
"The knowledge gained from this training should not remain confined to documents. I hope all participants will promptly implement the draft Occupational Health and Safety Action Plans they have developed for their respective projects and workplaces," he said.
Among others, Md Moksed Alam, Deputy Team Leader of the DSM Consulting Firm; Banda Hafiz, Training Specialist; and Syed Mahabub Ahsan, Media and Communication Specialist, were also present at the workshop.
