Khamenei’s coffin to be taken to Tehran’s Freedom Square
The coffin of Iran's former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is being carried to Tehran's Freedom Square today, where millions of people will pay their last respects, following his funeral. The Iranian leadership sees the huge gathering as not only an expression of mourning but also a message of state stability and continuity of power. After the formalities in Tehran, Khamenei's body will travel to Qom, Karbala, Najaf and be buried in his birthplace of Mashhad on July 9.
