HC grants bail to Momtaz in 3 cases
Pending cases block Momtaz’s immediate release from jail.
The High Court (HC) has granted bail to former lawmaker and singer Momtaz Begum in three separate cases filed over two murders and an attempted murder during the July Uprising.
A High Court bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher passed the order today (29 June) after disposing of the rules issued over the bail pleas.
Senior lawyers Motahar Hossain Saju and Barrister Sara Hossain, along with Advocate Khairunnesa, appeared for the petitioner, while Syeda Sajia Sharmin represented the state.
However, the former lawmaker will not be released immediately as more cases remain pending against her, Momtaz's lawyer Mosammat Khairunnesa said.
"She has seven cases against her. Of the three cases in which bail was granted today, two are from Manikganj and the other is from Kotwali police station," she told reporters.
Police arrested Momtaz from a house in the capital's Dhanmondi area on the night of 12 May last year.
She was later remanded for four days for questioning and then sent to jail. She has been in jail since then.
Popular folk singer Momtaz Begum became a member of parliament from a reserved women's seat on an Awami League nomination in 2008.
She was later elected MP from Manikganj-2 after contesting the 2014 and 2018 elections with the boat symbol.
However, she lost to an independent candidate after contesting from the same constituency in the 2024 national election.
