BSCL explores Earth observation satellite for disaster, farm monitoring
Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited has spotlighted the transformative potential of the country's proposed Earth observation satellite system at a seminar in Dhaka, highlighting its applications in disaster management, agriculture, forestry, land management, and natural resource conservation.
The seminar, titled "Bangladesh's Proposed Earth Observation Satellite System," took place at Hotel Grand Palace in the capital on Thursday (25 June).
The event explored the prospects, applications, and significance of the proposed satellite system across various sectors.
Dr Imadur Rahman, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited, delivered the keynote address.
He said a modern Earth observation satellite system would enable continuous monitoring of changes in land, water bodies, agriculture, forests, and the environment across Bangladesh.
He noted that the system would make government decision-making more data-driven and effective.
Dr Imadur Rahman said the satellite could play a crucial role in identifying areas vulnerable to natural disasters—particularly floods—monitoring water flow, and enabling early interventions to minimise damage.
He added that the technology would also support the monitoring of agricultural production, analysis of crop conditions, and detection of diseases and water shortages.
Speakers said an Earth observation satellite would help identify illegal activities in forests, monitor river erosion, analyse coastal changes, conduct land surveys, and support more efficient urban planning.
Md Motasim Billah, Additional Secretary (Company) of the Posts and Telecommunications Division, attended as the chief guest.
He underscored the importance of an Earth observation satellite and provided guidance on various aspects of the proposed system.
Representatives from various ministries, government agencies, and relevant sectors attended the seminar. They outlined their institutions' needs and potential uses for the satellite system and shared insights on enhancing its effectiveness.
SM Anwarul Aziz, Assistant General Manager of Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited, delivered a technical presentation.
Md Golam Sarowar, General Manager (Administration and Procurement), and Shah Ahmedul Kabir, General Manager (Sales and Marketing), both of Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited, participated in the panel discussion.
Touhidul Islam, Manager of Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited, moderated the event.
Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited stated that implementing an Earth observation satellite system would add a new dimension to Bangladesh's disaster response, agricultural development, environmental conservation, and sustainable planning.
