Indian envoy to Dhaka Dinesh Trivedi granted cabinet minister status
Trivedi, a senior BJP leader, a former member of parliament from Barrackpore, and a former union minister who is fluent in Bengali, was confirmed as the Indian envoy to Bangladesh on 27 April
The Indian government has granted Dinesh Trivedi, the Indian high commissioner to Bangladesh, the equivalent status of a union cabinet minister for ceremonial functions.
The announcement was made via an official memorandum issued by the Public Section of the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs yesterday (24 June).
The memo, signed by Under Secretary Kamlesh Rabidas, stated that Trivedi has been assigned this equivalent status in the Table of Precedence (ToP) as a measure personal to him, without formally amending the ToP, and specified that this position is strictly for ceremonial functions.
The notification was forwarded to all ministries and departments of the Government of India, state governments, union territory administrations, and various high-level secretariats, including the Prime Minister's Office and the President's Secretariat.
Trivedi, a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, a former member of parliament from Barrackpore, and a former union minister who is fluent in Bengali, was confirmed as the Indian envoy to Bangladesh on 27 April.
The BJP politician arrived in Bangladesh on 12 June to assume his responsibilities, taking over from Pranay Verma, who had served in Dhaka since September 2022 and has now been appointed India's ambassador to Belgium and the European Union.
