18 pro-Jamaat deputy AGs, assistant AGs resign over cancellation of 2 Supreme Court ordinances
The resigning lawyers say they stepped down in protest against the government's failure to implement the July Charter
Seven deputy attorneys general and 11 assistant attorneys general affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami have resigned from the Attorney General's Office, citing the government's failure to implement the July Charter and its decision to repeal two Supreme Court-related ordinances.
Deputy Attorney General Tarikul Islam, one of the officials who stepped down, confirmed the matter to the media today (23 June).
The lawyers submitted their resignation letters collectively to the Attorney General's Office yesterday, he said.
"We have resigned collectively in protest against the government's failure to implement the July Charter and its decision to repeal the Supreme Court Secretariat Appointment Ordinance and the Supreme Court Judges Appointment Ordinance," he added.
The deputy attorney generals who resigned are Yusuf Ali, Shafikur Rahman, Abdul Karim, Farid Uddin Khan, Golam Rahman Bhuiyan, Asad Uddin and Tarikul Islam.
The assistant attorney generals who resigned are Imrul Kayes Rana, Humayun Kabir Tanim, Abdul Kaiyum Bhuiyan, Abdullahil Maruf Fahim, Jowadur Rahman, Shamsil Arefin, Mahabuba Akter Roli, Nur Nabi Ujjal, Jakir Hossain, Al Reza Amir and Rezaul Islam.
According to Supreme Court sources, all those who resigned are active members and hold various positions in the Supreme Court branch of the Bangladesh Lawyers' Council, an attorneys' organisation associated with Jamaat-e-Islami.
They were appointed after the political changeover in the country on 5 August 2024.
