4.4 magnitude earthquake jolts Dhaka, parts of Bangladesh

An earthquake shook Dhaka and several other parts of Bangladesh tonight (22 June), causing brief panic among residents.
The tremor was felt at around 9:28pm, with many people reporting shaking in homes and office buildings.
According to United States Geological Survey, the earthquake's magnitude was 4.4 on the Richter scale. However, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said the magnitude was 4.0.
According to the BMD, the epicentre was located at Narayanganj's Rupganj, approximately 16 kilometres northeast of Dhaka. The quake originated at a depth of 16 kilometres.
No immediate reports of casualties or major damage were available as of filing this report. Authorities were yet to issue a detailed assessment of the situation.
Bangladesh has experienced several earthquakes in recent months.
On 7 June, a magnitude-5.6 earthquake with its epicentre in Bhutan was felt in Dhaka and other parts of the country. The epicentre was located about 432 kilometres north of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department's Seismic Centre in Agargaon.
Earlier, on 26 May, a magnitude-3.4 earthquake struck with its epicentre in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, and was felt in various parts of the country, including the capital.
Before that, on 21 April, a magnitude-5.1 earthquake originating near Homalin in Myanmar's Sagaing Region caused mild tremors in Dhaka, with residents reporting light shaking for a few seconds.
