India, the world's most populous country with over 1.5 billion people, has never qualified for a Fifa World Cup since the tournament began in 1930. China, the second-most populous nation, has made just one appearance, in 2002. At the 2026 World Cup, only two of the world's ten most populous countries are taking part.
