Bangladesh's missions abroad commemorate July Mass Uprising Day

Bangladesh's diplomatic missions in several countries observed July Mass Uprising Day yesterday (5 August) with commemorative programmes honouring the martyrs of the July Uprising and reaffirming the ideals of democracy, justice, national unity and a discrimination-free Bangladesh.

At the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, High Commissioner Manjurul Karim Khan Chowdhury described the July Uprising as a landmark chapter in Bangladesh's history, paying tribute to the martyrs and those injured during the movement.

He mentioned the importance of preserving the national unity forged through the uprising. Local community leaders, journalists and expatriate Bangladeshis also recalled the contributions of students, workers and people from all walks of life in transforming the anti-discrimination student movement into a nationwide uprising.
The Bangladesh Embassy in Rome observed the day with a one-minute silence, documentary screening and a discussion titled "The Spirit of the July Mass Uprising and Building a Prosperous Bangladesh under the Bangladesh First Policy."
Bangladesh's Ambassador to Italy Rakibul Haque paid tribute to the martyrs and highlighted the role of the Bangladeshi diaspora during the movement, urging expatriates to contribute to national development. In Uzbekistan, the embassy held discussions on the significance of the uprising before hosting a panel titled "Youth as a Change Maker in a Changing World".
Ambassador Dr Mohammad Monirul Islam highlighted the role of young people in the July Uprising and called for greater youth participation in building a democratic and prosperous Bangladesh. Uzbek academics and policymakers also discussed opportunities for strengthening bilateral cooperation.
The Bangladesh Consulate General in Istanbul organised Qur'an recitation, documentary screening and a discussion attended by members of the Bangladeshi community.
Consul General Muhammad Mizanur Rahman said the sacrifices of the martyrs would continue to inspire future generations and emphasised the role of expatriate Bangladeshis during the July movement.
The Bangladesh Embassy in Cairo marked the day with prayers, a documentary screening, a photo exhibition and a discussion attended by academics, professionals, businesspeople, students and members of the Bangladeshi community.
Embassy's Charge d'Affaires Goutam Kumar De described the July Uprising as a collective struggle against discrimination and corruption and urged expatriates to contribute to building a just and equitable Bangladesh.
Across the missions, programmes included recitations from the Holy Qur'an, readings of messages from Acting President Hafiz Uddin, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, along with documentary screenings on the July Uprising and special prayers for the martyrs.
Speakers paid tribute to those killed and injured during the movement while emphasising national unity, democratic values and the contributions of Bangladeshis living abroad.
