Glossing over the matte years
Matte liquid lipsticks once ruled makeup bags, but glossy lips are reclaiming their place. Paired with softly blended brown liner, the look is bringing a familiar beauty trend back to Dhaka’s dressing tables.
If you want to know what people are really wearing on their faces, forget the billboards in Gulshan. Look inside any tote bag during an afternoon coffee break in Dhanmondi, or at the mirror in a university washroom between classes.
For nearly five years, the story inside those bags was always the same: a small tube of bone-dry, super-matte liquid lipstick.
Back around 2016, matte lipstick felt like magic. In a city as hot and humid as Dhaka, it was practically a superpower. You painted it on in the morning, waited a few seconds for it to dry down flat, and went about your day. It survived plates of greasy wedding biryani, windy rickshaw rides, and endless cups of hot tea without leaving a single red mark on the cup.
Everyone loved it. But looking back at those photos today, there was something a bit too stiff about the whole look. Our lips looked flat, dry, and painted on, like a sticker pasted onto our faces.

Lately, that rigid look has quietly vanished. Walk into any café or scroll through your feed, and you will see something much softer, plumper, and dewier: lips outlined with a warm brown pencil, softly smudged, and topped with a layer of shiny gloss.
It feels fresh, but for anyone who grew up in the late 2000s, it also feels like meeting an old friend.
The 2008 dressing-table memory
Fashion loves a circle, and this one hits close to home.
Think back to around 2007 or 2008. If you were eight or nine, hanging around your older sister's or cousin's dressing table on an Eid afternoon, the setup was delightfully simple. No beauty blender sponges, no contour sticks, and no imported setting sprays.
Instead, there were two staples: a brown or dark plum pencil bought from the local corner shop for fifty takas, and a small, squeezy tube of clear strawberry lip gel.
The trick was quick and fun. You drew a dark line right around the edge of your lips. Then, you used your ring finger to gently smudge the inner edge so it didn't look like a harsh crayon mark. Finally, you squeezed a drop of clear, shiny gel right in the middle and pressed your lips together.
"I have been working in this beauty industry for over 25 years, and believe me, fashion is nothing but a cycle," said Sharmin Kochi, owner of the renowned Bindia Exclusive Beauty Parlour. She recalls watching this look rule dressing rooms decades ago. "Back then, a dark lipliner paired with a sheer coat of gloss or transparent balm was the ultimate beauty statement. Seeing it return in recent years feels like a sweet, familiar full circle," she added.
It was a look we copied from Channel V music videos, Bollywood heroines, and early-2000s pop stars. But it became an everyday favourite in Dhaka because it simply worked on our skin.
It was cheap, it was fun, and it gave you an instant glow without needing any foundation at all.
When matte took over
Then came the mid-2010s, and makeup suddenly became very serious. Influenced by Instagram makeup gurus and the craze for Kylie Jenner's lip kits, everyone wanted extreme perfection. Faces had to be completely shine-free, powdered down, and drawn with sharp lines. The lipsticks, meanwhile, were uncomfortably drying.
Nowshin Peeya, a corporate professional and self-professed makeup enthusiast, said, "I used to wear hyper-matte liquid lipsticks on different occasions during my student life, thinking that was the only way to look put-together all day long. It looked impressive in studio lighting, but in reality, it wasn't comfortable."
We put up with the dryness because it lasted all day. But eventually, even the biggest makeup lovers got tired of scraping their lipstick off at night with heavy cleansers.
On the retail front, beauty counters witnessed this slow burnout first-hand.
"For years, girls would come in asking only for the longest-lasting matte liquid tubes," said Samiha Sultana, a cosmetics retailer at Uttara's bustling Mascot Plaza. "Now customers ask, 'Apu, do you have clear gloss? Do you have lip oils?' Glosses are selling on a daily basis."
Softer, kinder, and built for our skin
When the brown liner and gloss combo started popping up on TikTok and Instagram again, it came as a relief.
Western influencers pitched it as a brand-new trend under names like "brownie glazed lips." But people were quick to point out that Black and Brown women had been wearing this exact style since the 1980s and 1990s, using dark pencils to create flattering nudes when mainstream brands didn't make shades for deeper skin.
For women in Bangladesh, bringing this combo back feels totally natural. Warm coffee, chocolate, and chestnut shades blend right into our natural undertones. They make the lips look defined and full without looking harsh or fake.
Beyond aesthetics, there is an element of practical illusion and self-care at play.
"People these days often think about getting invasive cosmetic procedures like lip fillers just to define their lips differently or get that plump pout," explained Sharmin Kochi of Bindia Exclusive. "What they don't realise is that clever makeup can achieve that exact dimensional look without the surgical costs, appointments, or physical pain. A carefully chosen, deeper lip pencil gives your lips instant definition and a fuller perimeter. When you layer a hydrating gloss over it, it catches light in the centre, creating the optical illusion of maximum volume."
At Mascot Plaza, this surging appetite spans every price tier.
"The demand cut across all budgets because every brand caught onto the wave," said Samiha Sultana. "For budget-friendly, everyday student purchases, brands like Pinkflash, Imagic, Technic, and Beauty Glazed are flying off the shelves. Then you have our mid-range staples like Essence, Maybelline, and SHEGLAM, which young professionals swear by.
And for those looking to invest in luxury or high-end formulas, Huda Beauty and Fenty Beauty are perpetual bestsellers. But no matter the brand tier, transparent lip gloss remains the undisputed queen of sales."
The new way to wear it
Trends never return in exactly the same way. The modern version is much softer, more intentional, and far more adaptable than what we wore back in 2008.
Instead of a stark, cartoonish outline, today's look is all about a seamless, diffused blend. You trace the outer lip with a soft wooden pencil, blend the edges inward with a fingertip or a fluffy brush, and finish with a glassy glaze. It looks effortless, chic, and healthy.
For working women like Nowshin Peeya, the glossy pout is less about daily routine and more about feeling radiant on special occasions.
"I don't necessarily wear a dripping high-gloss mouth on an average Tuesday sitting behind an office desk," Nowshin admits with a laugh. "For regular workdays, I keep it subtle. But the moment I step out for dinner, head to a lounge, or pack for a vacation, my transparent gloss is the very first thing I toss into my handbag."
According to Sultana, mauves, deep berries, and peachy nude glosses are gaining ground. Girls love experimenting with different pigments over their brown pencil bases, proving that this isn't a fleeting gimmick but a sustained shift in how our generation wants to wear makeup.
Kochi shares this view. Clear gloss reignited the movement, she said, but richer, more colourful glosses are now having their own moment on the vanity table. Whether you prefer a see-through glaze or a hint of tinted plum, the core philosophy remains unchanged: women want to celebrate the natural texture and fullness of their lips rather than mask them behind flat paint.
As those drying matte tubes sit forgotten at the back of our dressing drawers, reaching for a simple brown pencil and a shiny tube feels easy. It looks natural, feels deeply comfortable, and lets you smile without worrying about your makeup cracking in the middle of a conversation.
