Within seconds, a modern photograph can appear as if it was taken four decades ago.
Why are so many people suddenly morphing their photographs into portraits from a decade that few of them experienced? Perhaps it is a mix of nostalgia, curiosity, escapism and the sheer fun of seeing yourself in a different period.
Over the past few days, social media has turned into a portal to the past. People have been uploading photographs to AI platforms and asking them to morph their faces, clothes, surroundings and even the photographic aesthetic to the '80s.

The trend has spread rapidly across countries, including India and Bangladesh. On Instagram and Facebook, people have been posting their AI portraits, comparing them and encouraging their friends to join the trend.
For some, it is a genuine journey into a remembered past. For others, it is pure curiosity or simply a chance to have fun.
But why the '80s?
A vintage filter, perhaps?
Unlike standard photo filters, AI nostalgia does not merely add grain or faded colours to an existing photograph. It reconstructs an entire visual world.
Voluminous hairstyles, brightly coloured clothing, high-waisted trousers, sarees with broad borders, large spectacles, chunky jewellery, denim and oversized jackets are familiar visual cues.
The backgrounds can be transformed too—wooden showcases filled with crockery, patterned curtains, mosaic floors, bulky televisions, scooters, Ambassador cars and cinema posters can suddenly appear behind a person who was photographed only moments before.
Warm lighting, soft focus, film grain, faded colours, slight blur and overexposure help complete the illusion.
The result need not be strictly historically accurate. It is a more imaginative version of the past, assembled from collective memories, photographs, films and popular culture.
The question behind the trend is deceptively simple: What would I have looked like if I had lived in the '80s?
Nostalgia without personal memories?
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the trend is that not everyone recreating the '80s actually remembers the decade.
Younger users who were born long after the '80s ended are also joining the trend. For them, the decade is mostly informed by their parents' photographs, old films, music, fashion and stories.
In that sense, AI has created a strange sort of borrowed nostalgia.
People are not necessarily recalling their own past. They are imagining a past that they have inherited culturally.
The appeal is also facilitated by the fact that the '80s have become an instantly recognisable visual language. A hairstyle, a pair of spectacles, a particular shirt, a film-like texture or old-fashioned interiors can be enough to suggest an entire era.
Why do we romanticise the past?
Psychologists say nostalgia is a natural part of human experience.
"It is quite natural for people to feel nostalgic about the past, particularly periods when they had fewer responsibilities and more pleasant experiences," says consultant psychologist Dr Mini K Paul.
She explains that people tend to remember experiences through an emotional filter. Difficult moments can fade while happier memories remain prominent.
This phenomenon is known as rosy retrospection bias—the tendency to remember past experiences as more pleasant than they perhaps were when they were actually happening.
Nostalgia for some can therefore be a source of comfort, reassurance and even motivation.
Psychiatrist Dr Arun B Nair says romanticising the past is not unique to the present generation.
"People tend to believe that the time they lived through was somehow better," he says, noting that the current AI trend is essentially giving an old impulse a new technological form.
Nostalgia can also be a temporary means of escape.
With occupational pressure, academic worries, financial insecurities and interpersonal issues forming part of daily life, imagining a simpler or happier period can be a way out for people.
The need to belong
There may be another reason this trend is so powerful: connection.
Sociologist Jyoti S Nair, head of the Department of Sociology at Government KNM Arts and Science College, Kanjiramkulam, says people are drawn to periods that are associated with a more tangible and connected way of living.
"The world we live in is increasingly mediated by technology, speed and constant stimulation," she says. "Nostalgia gives people a way of locating themselves—not just as individuals, but as social beings."
Nostalgia can connect an individual memory to a collective one.
An AI-generated photograph that features an old-fashioned house, a familiar vehicle, a traditional outfit or the visual style of an old Bengali film can evoke memories that are very different for someone in Bangladesh compared with someone in India—or elsewhere.
Yet the emotional mechanism can be remarkably similar.
AI turns nostalgia into participation
Social media has changed nostalgia from something that is private into something that is participatory.
Before Instagram and Facebook, an old photograph may have stayed inside a family album. With AI, people have the chance to manufacture an imaginary version of that photograph and instantly post it to hundreds or thousands of others.
One person's post can be another person's inspiration.
The process is remarkably simple: upload a photograph, describe the desired decade and specify details such as clothing, hairstyle, lighting, location and photographic style.
Technology takes over.
And because the process takes place within seconds, there is little barrier to participation. Someone who may never have thought of using AI for creative purposes suddenly has a reason to experiment with it.
The technology, in other words, is not merely generating images. It is generating a new form of entertainment.
When the past becomes a product
The nostalgia boom is also leading to opportunities beyond social media.
With people demanding AI-generated portraits, photo editing, digital design, video production and personalised creative content, people are finding ways to turn these trends into small creative services and commercial opportunities.
It is one of the paradoxes of AI nostalgia: people are looking backwards while using one of the most futuristic technologies available.
The irony is difficult to miss.
We are using artificial intelligence—technology associated with the future—to recreate a decade associated with the past.
Even AI has something to say
To test the trend, AI can be asked why the '80s have become so appealing. One response describes the trend as a "fun retro-futuristic aesthetic", while another points to the '80s as an important period in the development of artificial intelligence itself.
Perhaps the more interesting question is not why AI finds the '80s interesting.
It is why we do.
The answer may be that nostalgia is not always about the past alone. It is often about the present.
It's hilarious how this '80s AI trend has completely taken over my newsfeed—it doesn't even matter where it started because everyone, including my cousins and colleagues, is jumping on it. Honestly, I'm loving every second of it; the captions are absurd, the background music choices are often unhinged, and even the people who completely miss the point end up getting flooded with laugh reacts. It's just pure, chaotic fun, and you really can't help but laugh along.
When the present feels overwhelming, the past can look calmer. When technology makes life feel increasingly intangible, old photographs can appear reassuringly physical. When people feel disconnected, memories can provide a sense of belonging.
And when someone can recreate all of that with a single prompt, nostalgia becomes easier—and more entertaining—than ever before.
Maybe the real trick is that we are always late to our own nostalgia. We recognise a moment mattered only after it has moved out of reach.
So, while the '80s keep returning to our screens in AI-generated photographs, there is an amusing possibility that somewhere in the background, 2026 is already becoming somebody's "those were the days".
