Serajul Islam elected ICOM Bangladesh chairperson
Md Serajul Islam, Keeper at the Bangladesh National Museum, was elected Chairperson of the Bangladesh National Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM Bangladesh) for the 2026–2029 term.
Professor Dr Sikdar Md Julkarnain of the Department of Archaeology at Jahangirnagar University was elected Vice-Chairperson, according to a press release.
The election was held on Friday (24 July) at Super Kitchen Restaurant in Shahbagh, Dhaka.
The other members elected to the Executive Council are:
- MM Rubayet Hossain, Assistant Curator, National Museum of Science and Technology
- Asma Ferdousi, Keeper, Bangladesh National Museum
- Dr Md Ataur Rahman, Deputy Director, Department of Archaeology
- Shah Md Rokonuzzaman, Assistant Chemist, Bangladesh National Museum
- Rashedul Alam Pradip, Curator, Toshakhana Museum
- Soumitra Kumar Biswas, Senior Artist, National Museum of Science and Technology
A five-member Election Committee, chaired by Professor Dr Maliha Nargis Ahmed of the Department of Archaeology at Jahangirnagar University, conducted the election.
The committee said the election was conducted in a free, fair, transparent and orderly manner.
Professor Dr Sufi Mostafizur Rahman, President of ICOM Bangladesh for the 2023–2026 term, congratulated the newly elected council.
He expressed confidence that the council would contribute to the development of Bangladesh's museum sector through professional excellence, research, heritage preservation and stronger international cooperation.
During its three-year term, the council will work to support museum development, strengthen the capacity of museum professionals, expand international networks and promote the principles and objectives of the International Council of Museums.
