Cancel appointment of BB governor to ensure neutrality: TIB
There have been media reports that the person appointed as governor is not suitable for the position and should be removed and replaced with a suitable individual, said Iftekharuzzaman.
The appointment of the new Bangladesh Bank governor should be cancelled to ensure that the central bank can function independently and neutrally, free from conflicts of interest, said Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman.
Speaking at a press conference titled "Giving highest strategic priority to implementing the government's commitments on good governance and anti-corruption: TIB's recommendations" held at the organisation's auditorium today (5 March), he said a person with proven skills and experience in the relevant sector should be appointed to the position and must be capable of carrying out the responsibilities of the governor without any conflict of interest.
There have been media reports that the person appointed as governor is not suitable for the position and should be removed and replaced with a suitable individual, added Iftekharuzzaman.
He also said a roadmap should be prepared for formulating and implementing a business integrity strategy in the private sector to prevent irregularities, corruption, looting and money laundering carried out through policy capture, collusion and syndicates by a section of the private business sector.
He further said a separate diversity commission should be formed to ensure fundamental rights while preserving the identity and uniqueness of different ethnic, religious, linguistic and professional communities and to promote mutual respect, empathy and cooperation in state and social institutions.
A roadmap should also be prepared and implemented for the execution of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord, he said.
Earlier, on 25 February, the Financial Institutions Division under the finance ministry issued a gazette appointing Md Mostaqur Rahman as governor of Bangladesh Bank for a four-year term, replacing Ahsan H Mansur. Mostaqur, a garment exporter and cost and management accountant, also chairs the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association Standing Committee on Bangladesh Bank.
