Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman today (24 July) welcomed the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin, saying it marked the removal of "a dark shadow of autocracy."
Speaking at a press conference following the president's resignation, Shafiqur said the party had long believed Shahabuddin was no longer fit to remain in office.

"A dark shadow of autocracy has been removed. We have no interest in why he resigned. We had already concluded that he was no longer qualified to serve as president and had lost his legitimacy," he said.
Shafiqur also criticised Shahabuddin's role during the July 2024 mass uprising, alleging that the president had remained silent during the violence.
"He did not utter a single word against the massacre," Shafiqur said.
The Jamaat chief congratulated Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad on assuming the role of acting president following Shahabuddin's resignation.
Referring to the constitutional process, Shafiqur said a new president must be elected within 90 days.
"Since parliament is expected to be in session within that period, the next president will be elected through the normal constitutional process. You will see what our role will be when the time comes," he said.
He added that if more than one candidate contests the presidency, the winner would be decided by a majority vote in parliament.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis Ameer Mamunul Haque, in a statement, said Shahabuddin's resignation was "not enough" and demanded his immediate arrest and trial.
The National Citizen Party (NCP) also called for the immediate arrest of Shahabuddin, describing him as an "accomplice of fascism" in a statement posted on its verified Facebook page today.
