Veteran politician Mosharraf Hossain passes away
Veteran politician, freedom fighter and former minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain died at a Dhaka hospital today. He was 83.
He breathed his last around 10:15am while undergoing treatment at Square Hospital in the capital, according to media reports.
Mosharraf, a presidium member of the now-banned Awami League, left behind his wife, three sons, one daughter, relatives, political colleagues and well-wishers.
Born on 12 January, 1943 in Mirsarai, Chattogram, Mosharraf was one of the senior figures in Bangladesh's post-independence politics.
After completing his graduation in engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, in 1966, he became active in politics. He was elected a member of the then East Pakistan Provincial Assembly in 1970.
He played an active role during the Liberation War and remained involved in politics, development work and public service after independence.
Mosharraf was elected lawmaker from Chattogram-1, Mirsarai, six times — in 1973, 1986, 1996, 2008, 2014 and 2018.
He served as civil aviation and tourism minister during the 1996–2001 Awami League government. He later served as housing and public works minister and again held the same portfolio during the 2014–2019 Awami League government.
He also served as a presidium member of the Awami League, one of the party's highest policymaking bodies.
