Mango harvesting begins in Satkhira with bumper yield hopes
Farmers expect good returns if prices remain fair; authorities warn against syndicates and chemical use
Mango harvesting has officially begun in Satkhira, with the first batch entering the market today (5 May).
The harvesting season was inaugurated at 11am at an orchard in the Fingri area of Satkhira Sadar upazila by acting deputy commissioner Bishnupada Pal, alongside officials from the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and local growers.
Farmers said production is expected to be high this year and expressed hope of making profits if fair prices are ensured.
However, they also alleged that market syndicates often deprive growers of reasonable prices, particularly in key trading hubs like Sultanpur market.
They urged the authorities to take strict action to prevent price manipulation and ensure a fair marketing system.
Officials acknowledged the concerns, noting that Satkhira mangoes enjoy a strong reputation nationwide and are also exported.
They emphasised the need to maintain quality by marketing chemical-free fruit.
Strict action will be taken against anyone attempting to use harmful chemicals or create syndicates in the market, officials said.
In the first phase, local varieties such as Gobindobhog, Gopalbhog and Golapkhas have reached the market, with Himsagar expected from 15 May, Langra from 27 May, and Amrapali from 5 June.
DAE Deputy Director Saiful Islam said the district's mango sector is expected to generate more than Tk350 crore in commercial value this season, adding that monitoring will continue to prevent irregularities.
