The incident occurred in Baghardari village under Swarupdaha Union in Chaugachha upazila.
According to police and local residents, a group of three suspected cattle thieves entered the house of Idris Ali, son of Sekendar Ali, in Baghardari village late last night.
Idris noticed the men trying to break the lock of his cowshed and raised an alarm. Hearing his cries, neighbours rushed to the scene and chased the suspects.
While two of them managed to flee, locals caught Mizanur and beat him, leaving him critically injured.
Idris said he saw three men near his cowshed trying to break the lock. After he raised the alarm, neighbours came and chased them, managing to catch one of the suspects.
Police later rescued the injured Mizanur from the scene and admitted him to Chaugachha Upazila Health Complex, where he died around 8am.
Reza Uddin, an emergency department physician at the health complex, said Mizanur was believed to have died from internal bleeding caused by severe injuries.
Mamunur Rashid, officer-in-charge of Chaugachha Police Station, said police rescued the injured man and took him to the hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.
The body will be sent to the morgue of Jashore 250-bed General Hospital for autopsy, the OC said.
He added that one person had been taken into police custody for questioning and that an investigation into the incident was underway. Legal proceedings are also being initiated, he said.
Meanwhile, a relative of Mizanur told The Business Standard by phone that he had a disability card and had a mental disability.
Raju Ahmed, who identified himself as Mizanur's uncle, said Mizanur would sometimes go missing from home and later return. He did not marry because of his disability, Raju said.
Mizanur had left home about a week before the incident, according to Raju.
