'Justice for Ramisa': Protesters demand death penalty for rapists at Shahbagh demonstration
The protest comes in the wake of the brutal killing of eight-year-old Ramisa Akter in Dhaka’s Pallabi area
A group of protesters staged a demonstration in Dhaka today (21 May), demanding the death penalty for perpetrators of child rape, murder, and sexual assault.
The protest, held under the banner "Justice For Ramisa", took place in front of the National Museum at Shahbagh at around 3:30pm.
During the programme, the demonstrators chanted various slogans, including "We want death penalty, death penalty for rapists" and "No place for rapists in my Sonar Bangla."
The protest comes in the wake of the brutal killing of eight-year-old Ramisa Akter in Dhaka's Pallabi area.
Ramisa's beheaded body was recovered on 19 May from the flat of an accused neighbour, Sohel Rana, on the third floor of a five-storey building adjacent to Millat Camp in Pallabi Section 11.
Police said the suspect dismembered the child's head and one hand in an attempt to dispose of the body and destroy evidence of rape after killing her.
Sohel Rana gave a confessional statement before a Dhaka court yesterday (20 May), admitting to raping and killing the eight-year-old.
In the same case, his wife, Swapna Khatun, 26, has been sent to jail custody.
