Govt allocates Tk20cr for madrasahs, orphanages to preserve sacrificial hides ahead of Eid-ul-Adha
In addition, training sessions on proper animal slaughter and hide preservation will be organised at district and upazila levels.
The government has allocated Tk20 crore to ensure that madrasahs and orphanages across the country can properly preserve and manage hides of sacrificial animals during the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha.
The allocation was approved on 4 May by the Ministry of Finance in favour of the Ministry of Commerce, subject to certain conditions, according to commerce ministry sources.
A large portion of the fund will be used to purchase salt, which will then be distributed among deputy commissioners (DCs).
The DCs will supply the salt to all madrasahs and orphanages in their respective districts ahead of Eid.
In addition, training sessions on proper animal slaughter and hide preservation will be organised at district and upazila levels, the sources said.
Salt is essential for preventing decay and ensuring longer preservation of animal hides. Officials said improper use of salt leads to the damage of a large number of hides every year.
Officials of the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) and tannery owners said preserving a medium to large cow hide requires around 7–8kg of salt, and in some cases up to 10kg, while each goat or sheep hide requires about 3–4kg.
According to a notification from the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock following Eid-ul-Adha 2025, a total of 91,36,734 animals were sacrificed.
This included 47,05,106 cattle and buffalo, 44,30,668 goats and sheep, and 960 other animals, such as camels and sheep.
On 3 May, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammed Aminur Rashid said at a press briefing that the country's demand for sacrificial animals this year stands at 1,01,06,334.
