BERC set to announce decision on proposed electricity tariff hike tomorrow
The announcement comes on the heels of a two-day public hearing held on 20 and 21 May 2026, where stakeholders and consumer rights groups debated the justification for the utility bodies’ financial adjustments.
The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) is scheduled to announce its official decision regarding the proposals to readjust power tariffs at the wholesale, transmission, and retail levels tomorrow (3 June).
According to an official notice issued by the commission today (2 June), the decision will be made public through a press briefing at 3pm at the BERC office.
The announcement comes on the heels of a two-day public hearing held on 20 and 21 May 2026, where stakeholders and consumer rights groups debated the justification for the utility bodies' financial adjustments.
The commission reviewed separate proposals submitted by the country's primary power generation, transmission, and distribution entities seeking upward price revisions.
Earlier, at the public hearing, the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) proposed raising wholesale electricity tariffs by Tk1.20 to Tk1.50 per unit, warning that without an adjustment, the sector's financial deficit would widen significantly.
Following the proposals from BPDB, PGB, and all retail distributors such as BREB, DPDC, Desco, WZPDCO and Nesco, the Technical Evaluation Committee of BERC has recommended a weighted average increase of Tk1.25 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in retail electricity tariffs.
The Technical Evaluation Committee said the proposed tariff adjustment could reduce government power subsidies by up to Tk13,000 crore in the 2026–27 fiscal year.
