Will request PM to name a Buet dorm after Abrar Fahad: Education minister
He says preserving the memory of Abrar Fahad's killing is essential to ensure such a tragedy is never repeated.
Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon today (27 June) said he would request Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to rename one of the dormitories at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) as "Abrar Hall" in memory of slain student Abrar Fahad.
Speaking as the chief guest at the orientation programme for first-year students of the 2025-26 academic session at Buet, the minister said the memory of Abrar's murder should never fade and that future generations must learn from the incident.
"I will request the prime minister to name this hall 'Abrar Hall'. If that becomes possible, two commemorative programmes will be held there every year in Abrar's memory," he said.
"We must learn from that tragedy so that no talented student ever again meets such a fate because of political or any other reason," the minister added.
Abrar Fahad, a second-year Buet student, was beaten to death inside Sher-e-Bangla Hall in October 2019, triggering nationwide outrage and renewed calls to end political violence on university campuses.
Milon also emphasised the need to align university curricula with industry demands and strengthen collaboration between universities and the industrial sector.
He said engineering education should be expanded by increasing the number of seats to meet the country's growing demand for skilled graduates.
Prime Minister's Education Adviser Mahdi Amin, who also addressed the programme, described Buet as a centre of excellence that fosters creativity, innovation and nation-building.
He said the university had made significant contributions to Bangladesh's independence, sovereignty and the July Uprising.
"Shaheed Abrar Fahad was one of your predecessors," Mahdi told the newly admitted students.
