Cumilla–Brahmanbaria highway construction accelerated to reduce public sufferings: Road transport minister
According to the minister, the 82.68-kilometre highway includes a key 28-kilometre stretch from Brahmanbaria to Sarail that has already been brought under four-lane development.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam said reducing public suffering is a government priority, with visible progress on the Cumilla–Brahmanbaria highway expected soon.
He said in parliament while responding to an urgent notice issued in public importance raised by NCP leader and Cumilla-4 MP Hasnat Abdullah today (29 April).
The minister said repair and expansion works are being accelerated to ease public suffering, while the government seeks alternative funding as the four-lane project remains outside foreign financing.
According to the minister, the 82.68-kilometre highway includes a key 28-kilometre stretch from Brahmanbaria to Sarail that has already been brought under four-lane development.
Robiul Alam further said that 804 metres of rigid pavement construction is ongoing in the most affected areas, including Debidwar, Kangshanagar, and Bhinglabari.
Under a periodic maintenance programme, initiatives have been taken to widen and strengthen an additional 1,845 metres of road in areas such as Moynamati, Phulgachtala, Companiganj, Katherpul, and Kutichoumuhani.
He also noted that tenders have been invited to widen nearly 20 kilometres of road from Cumilla to Debidwar to 34 feet.
