Ctg shooting: 11-yr-old Reshmi dies after week-long battle
Reshmi was shot in the head on 7 May during a firing by unidentified assailants in the Roufabad area under Bayezid Bostami Police Station
An 11-year-old girl who was critically injured in a shooting incident in Chattogram's Bayezid Bostami area died today (14 May) after battling for her life for seven days at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
Reshmi Akter, a fourth-grade student, died at around 9:45am while undergoing treatment at the hospital, confirmed CMCH Director Brig Gen Mohammad Taslim Uddin.
Reshmi was shot in the head on 7 May during a firing by unidentified assailants in the Roufabad area under Bayezid Bostami Police Station.
In the same incident, 24-year-old Mohammad Hasan Raju from Raozan's Kadalpur area was shot dead on the spot.
According to police and locals, Reshmi had stepped out of her house to buy betel leaves for her mother when she was struck by a bullet during the attack.
She was first taken to a private hospital and later shifted to CMCH, where she remained on life support throughout her treatment.
Doctors said the bullet entered through her eye and caused severe brain damage. Although an emergency surgery was needed, her physical condition was not suitable for any operation and the bullet could not be removed from her head.
A medical board comprising specialists from the neurosurgery, ICU and anaesthesiology departments was formed to oversee her treatment.
On 10 May, doctors said Reshmi's condition had reached a critical stage with signs consistent with brain death.
"The child's condition is critical. Her consciousness level was virtually zero and there was no blood pressure," Professor Md Baki Billah, head of the ICU department, had said at the time.
Hospital Director Taslim Uddin earlier said surgery was not possible due to her condition and she had been kept on continuous life support since being admitted.
Police suspect the attack on Raju was premeditated and may have been carried out in retaliation for the killing of Jubo Dal activist Nasir Uddin in Raozan on 26 April.
Investigators are also probing the possible involvement of fugitive criminal Mohammad Raihan, who is linked to multiple murder cases.
Reshmi's mother, Sakhina Begum, filed a case against unidentified individuals on 9 May.
"The investigation is ongoing. However, no one has been arrested so far," said Bayezid Bostami Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Karim.
The shooting took place around 9:30pm on 7 May in Bashbaria Bihari Colony near the Shaheed Minar area on the Muradpur-Oxygen road in Chattogram city.
