According to RAB, the suspects attacked Bobby Begum in an abandoned room at Methikanda Railway Station late on 4 July, leaving her critically injured before fleeing with around Tk20,000 she had saved over a long period.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested five suspects over the murder of a 70-year-old speech-impaired railway cleaner in Narsingdi, accusing them of brutally assaulting her to rob Tk20,000 she had saved up.
The deceased, Bobby Begum, worked as a cleaner at Methikanda Railway Station in Raipura upazila.
The arrested suspects are Ilias, 35, Sakib, 19, Belal Mia, 26, Din Islam, 26, and Rifat, 20. They were arrested in separate raids in Narsingdi and Nabinagar Upazila of Brahmanbaria on Thursday night.
RAB-11 Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Masud Parvez disclosed the information at a press briefing held at the RAB Media Centre in Dhaka's Karwan Bazar today (10 July).
According to RAB, the suspects attacked Bobby Begum in an abandoned room at Methikanda Railway Station late on 4 July, leaving her critically injured before fleeing with around Tk20,000 she had saved over a long period.
Local residents rescued her and admitted her to hospital. She died on 8 July while being taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment. A murder case was later filed at Bhairab Railway Police Station.
Masud said RAB-11 arrested three of the suspects from areas adjacent to Methikanda Railway Station, while RAB-9 detained the remaining two during a raid in the Natun Eidgah area of Kaitala Nabinagar's South Union.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspects admitted they had prior knowledge that Bobby Begum kept cash with her, RAB said. Acting on that information, they allegedly planned the robbery, assaulted her late at night, and escaped with the money.
RAB said it is investigating whether anyone else was involved in the crime and vowed to bring any additional suspects to justice if evidence emerges.
Responding to a question about criminal activities on railway premises, RAB Legal and Media Wing Director Wing Commander MZM Entekhab Chowdhury said railway security falls under the jurisdiction of the Railway Police, who are working sincerely.
However, he said RAB would take action whenever such incidents come to its attention.
The five suspects have been handed over to Bhairab Railway Police Station after completion of the necessary legal formalities, RAB said.
