Man caught trying to buy 20 bhori of gold with counterfeit cash
Police from Banani Police Station later took Rubel into custody and seized Tk57.05 lakh in counterfeit notes from him.
A man was caught after allegedly attempting to buy around 20 to 21 bhori of gold jewellery with counterfeit cash at a jewellery shop in Banani, while his alleged accomplice fled the scene.
The incident took place around 4pm yesterday (6 August) at a jewellery shop in Banani Super Market, said DMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Niaz Mehdi.
According to police, two men entered the shop posing as customers and said they wanted to buy gold jewellery for a relative's wedding. After selecting the ornaments, they asked the shop staff to bill and pack the items.

When asked to make the payment, the two men took out a large amount of cash from a black trolley bag and placed it on the shop's glass counter. The employees became suspicious after examining the money and suspected the notes were counterfeit.
The two men then tried to flee. Locals managed to catch one of them, identified as Md Rubel Ahmed Fakir, while the other escaped.
Police from Banani Police Station later took Rubel into custody and seized Tk57.05 lakh in counterfeit notes from him.
Police said Rubel has eight cases filed against him at different police stations across the country.
Legal proceedings are underway against him, while efforts are continuing to arrest the absconding accomplice and others involved in the incident.
