Death-row convict in 2005 murder case arrested after two decades on the run
He was sentenced to death in the case.
Police have arrested a fugitive convict sentenced to death for the killing of a young man during a robbery at Kallyanpur bus stand in 2005.
The fugitive, Md Sohel Rana alias Kalu, 40, was arrested around 1pm today (August 27) from Kallyanpur slum no 8 under Mirpur police station, confirmed Niaz Mehedi, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Media and Public Relations Division.
He said Kalu is a warrant-listed accused in a murder case filed with Mirpur Model Police Station. A court sentenced him to death in the case. Legal proceedings against him are underway, he added.

According to police and court sources, Shafikul Alam alias Shafik arrived at Kallyanpur bus stand in Dhaka from Bogura by SR Paribahan at around 4:15am on 22 June 2005 and was on his way to a friend's home.
On the way, three robbers stopped him in front of Asia Cinema Hall and threatened him with sharp weapons and attempted to take his cash and mobile phone.
When Shafik resisted, the robbers repeatedly hacked him with sharp weapons, injuring him in different parts of his body. He later died while undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Following the incident, his father, Md Akbar Ali, filed a murder case with Mirpur Model Police Station, after which the police arrested him.
He later confessed to the killing in a statement before the court. However, he was released on bail while the case was pending and subsequently went into hiding.
After completing the investigation, the investigating officer, Mirpur Model Police Station Inspector Md Rezaul Karim, submitted a charge sheet against the accused to the court on 5 April, 2006.
The court later framed charges against them on September 23 of the same year and ordered the trial to begin.
During the trial, the court recorded the testimony of nine of the 14 witnesses.

Nazim Uddin alias Nazim alias Noju were sentenced to death. Each was also fined Tk50,000.
