Mother of 3 minors granted bail after 15 days in jail

Mother of three minor children, Akhi Khatun, who had been imprisoned in Naogaon jail in a drug-related case, was finally granted bail yesterday (13 May).

She had been in Naogaon District Jail for the past 15 days following an order by a mobile court.

According to reports, Akhi's husband died in March, while Akhi, the family's only remaining support, was jailed, leaving her three vulnerable children helpless. The matter drew public attention after it was broadcast by a private television channel.

The report also drew the attention of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who reportedly instructed authorities to look into the matter and ensure legal assistance for the woman.

Following the directive, local BNP leaders became involved in the legal process, and Akhi was eventually granted bail through due legal procedures.

Sources said Mahadebpur upazila BNP president Rabiu Alam Bullet was instructed on Tuesday night to stand beside the family and provide legal support.

After being released from jail yesterday, Akhi embraced her three children emotionally.

Naogaon District and Sessions Judge Court Public Prosecutor Md Shahriar said, "I was informed that the prime minister had instructed that the matter be treated with importance. He directed that swift steps be taken to ensure the woman receives justice and legal remedy according to the law."

"Necessary measures were taken immediately. After the matter was brought to the attention of Senior District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Roknuzzaman, the court instructed the defence to submit a petition. Following hearings from both sides, the court, being satisfied, granted the woman bail," he added. 

He further said, "The woman has already been released from prison. She is now present here with us as well. She has received the legal remedy she was entitled to under the law."
